Cinema 4D, Adobe Photoshop CS6 General Public Prof. N. Woolridge This purpose of this piece was to develop skills in 3D modelling, rendering, texturing, lighting, and setting up a virtual camera. The cover is editorial, and employs the use of visual metaphors to convey the concept of rabies virus and bioterrorism. Credit goes to Nature for the layout and design of the text on the cover. |

These are the initial concept sketches I did. I wanted to incorporate a gas mask and the metaphor of a virus representing a bullet in biological warfare somehow. I also wanted a colour palette that had contrasting colours of green and red. These concept pieces were done in Adobe Photoshop.

Once I decided on the image of the rabies virus exploding from the eyepiece of the mask, I started to model the structures. This was quite a learning experience as I had never touched a 3D program before. There was a lot of trial and error.

After I finished modelling, I found texturing, cameras, and lighting to be another challenge. It was difficult to make the glass and the texture of the gas mask realistic. I rendered the glass, the exploding viruses, and the mask with depth of field separately and combined them together in Adobe Photoshop to achieve the final piece.
