Prof. M. Dryer

The creation of this project was used as an introduction to the technologies and process used in creating an animation from start to finish. The animation criteria included three levels of scale of an anatomical structure and promoting the Terrence Donelly Health Sciences Centre where the BMC program is located. The goals were to learn basic modelling skills, shader design, lighting, animating camera movements, and compositing and editing. A 3D animation workflow was developed and extensive problem-solving skills were developed as a result of the  steep learning curve of all the various softwares.

PROCESS WORK

Teeth and Gums
This still footage image was modelled with Maya, and edited in Adobe After Effects. Challenges included designing a shader that captured the smooth organic texture of human teeth and the fleshy texture of the gums. A lot of subsurface scattering was used to create this look. I use my own teeth as references while modelling. It took many tries to make three molars I was satisfied with to use in the animation. It was challenging to create three teeth that were anatomically accurate and aesthetically pleasing.

Macroscopic Dentin
This third still footage image depicts the structure of dentin, with its fluid filled tubules and nerves extending through the tubules. The structures were rendered in separate passes and composited in Adobe Photoshop.
