Carbon dust, Adobe Illustrator CS6

Medical and anatomy students

Print

Prof. D. Mazierski

The purpose of this project was to develop techniques in carbon dust, a medium that has been used throughout medical illustration historically, and to convey form and texture of an anatomical specimen through tone.

Process Work

I first did a rough sketch from an actual skull and refined it to a clean line version that was ready for transfer.

This final sketch was transferred onto crescent board for carbon dusting. I used many references from anatomy atlases as well as the skull to try to ensure my illustration was as tonally rendered as anatomically correct and realistic as possible.
