Medical Legal Personal Injury Boards - The Case of Jessie Jack

Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS6

Canadian courtroom (plaintiff)

Print

Prof. L. Lax

These illustration boards are intended to clarify the injuries sustained by Jessie Jack in the courtroom for a medical personal injury case. Challenges included interpreting poor-quality x-ray images and depicting fractures of the femur and humerus in a clear, understandable manner without being inflammatory. Another challenge was to convey all the information needed while keeping the layout as clean and concise as possible. Emphasis was taken to ensure the illustrations were relatable, personal, and evoked sympathy from the audience. This project served as an introduction to the guidelines and conventions in developing media for the Canadian courtroom.

This project was a team effort with Chi-Chun Liu at http://bmc1.utm.utoronto.ca/~chichun/final/index.html

This piece won an Award of Merit in the Didactic/Instructional – Molecular/Biological/Life Sciences category at the 2014 AMI conference.

PROCESS WORK

Initial sketches were done to determine a general layout and to isolate the key elements needed in the two boards.
Picture
Each asset was pathed in Adobe Illustrator by me, and the base renderings were done by Chi-Chun Liu. On top of the base I added textures, finished the rendering, and highlighted key features of the fractures.
Picture
Real bones were used for reference and anatomical accuracy.
Picture
Several layouts were done in Adobe Illustrator.
